Hudson, FL – Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point recently awarded the winners of the Tampa Bay Times Newspapers in Education “Making a Difference Contest.” First prize was awarded to John Hibbs. John attends Ridgewood High School and is entering the 11th grade. Second place winner is Bobbi-Jean Barker. Bobbi-Jean attends the Florida Virtual School and will be entering 11th grade. Bobbi-Jean is also a teen volunteer at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.
Earlier this year the Tampa Bay Times and Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point joined forces to produce a Newspapers in Education edition entitled “It’s about time…saving lives and preventing injuries.” Fifteen thousand complimentary copies were distributed to Pasco, Hernando and Citrus high schools. Teachers used this publication to discuss the importance of “The Golden Hour,” “Risky behaviors that lead to injury,” “Having fun safely,” “Water safety,” “Driving Safety,” and even “Pedestrian safety tips.” These articles were used in the classroom discussions and for homework assignments.
One of the learning opportunities was competing in the Making a Difference Contest. The students’ mission was to write an essay or produce a video addressing a safety problem and come up with a possible solution. Students submitted their entries to the Tampa Bay Times who selected a first and second place winner. Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point’s Volunteer Association provided the two prizes. First place winner received a gift card worth $300 and the second place winner received a gift card worth $100.
